Hospitalfield House, Arbroath, Scotland

Hospitalfield House

The Monument

Constructed during the 13th century, the Hospital of Saint John the Baptist, which belonged to the nearby Abbey of Aberbrothock, was bought and enlarged in 1665 by James Fraser, then between 1850 and 1890, thoroughly restructured by the painter P.A Fraser and his wife who installed an exquisite decorative arts, painting and sculpture collection. This complex is recognized a prototype to the “Arts & Crafts” movement in Scotland.

The Activities

The Hospitalfield trust is a multidisciplinary research centre historically linked to the visual arts. It promotes visual arts through an artist-in-residence programme, master classes and summer schools. It is also a centre for archaeological studies in the Arbroath area. UK based artists can beneficiate of sponsorship from private trust funds and Scottish artists from the Royal Scottish Academy, the Saltire Society and from the Royal Society of Watercolours Painters. Hospitalfield is also an ideal place for conferences, lectures and business seminars. The Trust continues to develop a successful jazz programme (“Jazz at Hospitalfield”).
