The Monument

The Steinhofel Castle and estate were constructed in 1796 by the famous architects David and Friedrich Gilly. The park is one of the earliest examples of English landscape gardens in Eastern Germany. Near the castle, the Gilly brothers built a library shaped on a temple, which held a collection of 3800 books. Part of the library was destroyed during World War II.

The Activities

The LandKunstLeben (Land-Art-Life) association was created in 2001 in Bucholz, between Berlin and the border of Poland, in order to develop the exceptional architecture and landscape of the village of Steinhofel. LandKunstLeben is involved in research and communication activities concerning all aspects of rural history. In the grounds of the former estate tree nursery, the association has created a garden as a contemporary art space. It hosts new artistic projects and horticultural ventures. Exhibitions, conferences and site-specific events investigate the spaces and contexts of the village, land and landscape.
