Monostori Eröd Komárom, Komárom Dunapart, Hungary

The Monument
Situated on the Hungarian riverside of Danube, the Komárom fortress was built between 1850 and 1871 to protect Vienna of attacks from the East to house an army of 10,000 soldiers. It is the greatest system of fortifications of an ensemble remaining from the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The 30,000m sq. covered spaces (casemates, shelters, hospital) reaching down the ground are covered with grass, forming a perfect symbiosis with nature.
The Activities
The goal of the centre is to find an innovative cultural function for the ensemble, a sort of “theme park” which, taking stock of the historical importance of the site, should obtain a prominent position in the tourist and cultural offer of the Central European region and contributing to the redefinition and promotion of new relations between the military culture and the civil society. The progressive restoration and adequate maintenance of the ensemble of the buildings started in 2000 and will last for 15-20 years. The revival of the property shall involve public and private sources allowing the construction of exhibition halls, conference centre, theatre, hotels and sport facilities.
